A Democratic hero died last night.

Thu Mar 13, 2008 at 06:53:11 AM PDT

Howard Metzenbaum died in Florida (h/t Davybaby) last night.  Metzenbaum, senator from Ohio, a true liberal and hero of working people and consumers everywhere, was the kind of senator who put his love of country and its citizens above any personal agenda.

It was diaried last night by Davybaby but didn't get much attention. Senator Metzenbaum deserves our profound gratitude and respect.

John Edwards, please check your gut.

I've been around dKos for a while, and I know the rules, but I've got to vent here; this is more of an open threader, but there are no recent open threads. This is a rant.  On Hardball, John Edwards had it going - Tweetie being kind, UNC Chapel Hill cheering big time, the whole enchilada.

Then Tweetie asked him "What are the American people looking for (in a candidate)?"

Edwards' answer?  "Optimism and vision".

AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

HONESTY!  We want HONESTY!  We can make up our own minds and save this nation if we KNOW what the situation is!

Laura and Company...

Fri Oct 22, 2004 at 04:38:47 AM PDT

Laura Bush is coming to town!  She will address residents of an independent health care community here in the Milwaukee area, in a restaurant in the complex where many of them like to gather.

But they have to get there early if they wish to hear her; she's bringing about 100 of her own (non-resident) supporters to the party.  I would have thought that Laura's fans already knew her views on the issues.  Why are they being granted prime seats in this community-based event at the expense of actual residents?  Shocking....

"Blogs help democracy"

Op-ed in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from Jeffrey McCall, Depauw U. mentions Kos and other blogs. On balance, according to Jeff, they're worthy and support good news reporting.  Despite the wingnut references, I agree with Dr. McCall.  See what you think...

Milwaukee, WE WIN! Per WUWM/NPR:

Fri Oct 15, 2004 at 03:05:14 PM PDT

Milwaukee will get its fair share of ballots!  County Supervisor and city reached a deal whereby the city and count split the costs of 200,000 extra ballots; if they're used the county reimburses the city.  Heat applied to the winger Co Exec did some good (yeah, right, it was all about VOTER FRAUD!)

Are you listening, Milwaukee?

The county exec here is a Republican; the mayor, a Democrat. The county is responsible for providing ballots for the November elections.  Although the prospects here for huge voter turnout are excellent, the CE wants to reduce the number of ballots from 2000 levels to "limit the prospects of voter fraud".

The Great Broadband Giveaway

Fri Oct 08, 2004 at 09:36:43 AM PDT

Michael Powell gives SBC and the other majors yet another pleasuring.  This continued caving to the comm industry (and the content Gestapo) had better end with Bush's January roll down the WH steps, folks, or we can say "bye bye" to the internet as we love it.

The Value of dKos

Sun Aug 15, 2004 at 07:29:27 AM PDT

dKos is valuable because it's a buffer between dOcean and dLand and it has nice beaches.

OK, bad earth science humor, but while attending a training session before a GOTV effort I realized that my time spent here at Obsession Central gave me a huge and readily available source of information and ideas.

During Q&A, many of the questions folks asked indicated a great desire to defeat Bush, but not a great knowledge of the KE positions and policy proposals.  There are so many newbies. I kept wanting to stick up my hand and say "Ooh, ooh! Ask me!"

My First Since 1972: GOTV, Milwaukee

Sat Aug 14, 2004 at 02:31:07 PM PDT

Okay, I've been a slacker. I only went out in 72 because the girl I was dating hated Nixon as much as she liked me; it was mandatory. Not too presidentially successful, but Barb Mikulski reaped some bennies. Since that time I've been politically dormant - profession, family, football on Teevee - you know, right?

PJ O'Rourke and Iraq

Wed Apr 14, 2004 at 08:08:15 PM PDT

I've wondered what PJ thinks about our occupation of post-Saddam Iraq, and hope he has something to say.  His libertarian "pants-down Republican" stance must be difficult to reconcile with recent events.

I met PJ once, in 1970, in the Grad Club at Johns Hopkins.  He was an MA candidate, I was a freshman, and we both wanted beer. He didn't say much, but what he said was funny.

Anyway, he's been in Iraq:

I'd like to hear his opinions.  He is now my favorite living humorist; God rest Douglas Adams.
